There are four areas of your life that are essential to upkeep after graduation. It’s so easy to get caught up in the busyness of postgraduate life, but if we do not keep developing ourselves as human beings, then we’re simply becoming robots. No one wants to be a robot. Well, unless by robot you mean you get to have your own surrogate, in which case, I would love to be a robot. Because jumping off buildings and being made out of metal would be awesome.
Unfortunately, however, the technology for surrogates is not yet up to par, and so we still need to focus on those elements which make us human beings. What makes us laugh? What makes us come alive? What are the things that bring us joy? Honestly, work can become so monotonous and boring at times. If that’s the only thing that we ever did, then life would just suck!
I have a friend right now that works basically 16 hours a day. Then he goes home, and studies for some upcoming tests that he has to take in order to get his MBA. Sure, the degree guarantees that “promotion” he’s always wanted, but it also comes with a 20 hours of work a day price-tag. I guess it works for him…but in my opinion, I feel like it defeats the whole purpose of making all that money if you don’t even get to enjoy the money that you make. At the end of the day, money is just paper.
With that being said, in order to stay grounded in this hectic life, I believe that the four areas of your life that you need to develop are these: Physical, Relational, Spiritual, and Career. I will give a brief excerpt on each element, and then as the weeks progress begin to expound upon all of them in future posts.
1. Physical. Let’s get real, no one wants to become that pudgy postgraduate worker that spends so much time working that he’s taken himself out of the dating market. What’s the point in making all that money if you’re going to botch your romantic life through subsequent butter rolls that keep piling up near your abdomen area? Exactly. There is no point. If you can’t take care of your body, then you’re missing out on a ton of fantastic benefits from being fit. Yes, the romantic life is one of those things. However, there are a ton of other benefits such as energy, endurance, and overall good health. The practical reasons for keeping healthy physically are so plentiful that to not will hurt every area of your life.
2. Relational. All of us in this culture desire for independence. However, none of us could ever make it through this world if we only cared about ourselves. We need to build meaningful relationships with people that we know and feel a kinship with. Having a lot of acquaintances is nice, but honestly, life is only worth living because I have people that I consider close. You cannot let your job or circumstances ever take away from those relationships you value most.
3. Spiritual. This isn’t necessarily directed toward any religion. I have a deep and meaningful relationship with God, but when I say spiritual, I mean rather the idea that you need to stay connected with meaningful things of this world that are greater than yourself. Not only will it make you feel better, but it will give your life purpose. Very few people are so selfish that they care nothing for those around them. Don’t be a scrooge.
4. Career. Finally, the last area of your life that I believe is important to develop, although it sounds almost contradictory after my opening few paragraphs, is your career. What I mean by career, however, is that you need to develop yourself as a person to be more marketable in the “career” world of your choice. For example, if you are applying for some administrative job and you see yourself as an administrator in general, you need to develop your Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. skills so that you put yourself in a better position for that promotion/next job opportunity. Be proactive! Strive for excellence, and leave mediocrity behind in the dust where it belongs.
